Thatcher’s Wassail

The Thatchers Wassail is a celebration like no other, where centuries-old customs come to life in a festival of laughter, music and spectacle. Over the years, we’ve watched it grow and evolve, adding fresh, exciting elements each season. From iconic comedians like Ed Byrne and Nina Conti to new venue locations across the Thatchers estate. It has been a pleasure to watch the Wassail continue to adapt and thrive alongside Thatchers itself, presenting new creative challenges for us to meet each year.

But what exactly is the Wassail? Rooted in ancient rituals, the event is held annually to bless the apple orchards, ensuring a bountiful harvest. Guests are immersed in this rich tradition, arriving to a warm welcome with Thatchers’ finest ciders and a magical ambiance. The evening’s highlight is the Wassail procession, where attendees, armed with sticks and cider, ward off evil spirits amidst the glow of a bonfire, ensuring good fortune for the orchards.

As the night unfolds, tradition gives way to celebration. Guests are treated to a cider-infused three-course feast prepared by Fosters, followed by performances from the Mendip Morris Men, whose lively dancing invites everyone to join the fun, and a live band to close out the evening. Each year, we elevate the experience, adding new “wow factors” to keep the event fresh and captivating.

In 2024, we introduced the Thatchers Hot Air Balloon, which became the centrepiece of the event. Inside the marquee, mini hot air balloons floated overhead, rustic seating created a cozy atmosphere, and SLX’s warm, autumnal lighting set the perfect mood for a magical winter’s evening.

Looking ahead to 2025, we’re excited to see what new ideas we can bring to the table to continue enhancing this iconic event.
