Sustainability at ACEs HQ
From our beautiful base in the heart of North Somerset, we are lucky to have fields and forests surrounding us. We are no stranger to a deer at our lake, squirrels scurrying past and horses passing by our front gates. Nature is important to us and we are very proud to be based an almost fully self-sufficient office. See more details below:
Solar Panels
All of our electricity comes from our roof full of solar panels. Thanks to our large roof space, we are able to harness enough solar energy to power our warehouse and offices, as well as providing renewable energy back to the grid. Saving around 34,000kg/CO2e each year.
On-site water supply
We are lucky enough to have our own water supply from a bore hole, which gets filtered for suitability for drinking and use throughout our office and warehouse. This is enough to supply us with almost all of our own water!
Biomass heater
Our biomass boiler provides us with heat and hot water when we need it! The boiler uses pellets made from the waste wood of other productions, sourced from sustainably managed forests!
Recycling
As a team we work hard to reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible. We have large recycling facilities on-site to ensure that anything that can be recycled, is. We also have on-site composting for all our compostable waste.
Wildflowers
On-site at our office, we have areas of land dedicated to growing wildflowers, which increase biodiversity, supports meadow wildlife, provides food to pollinators and many more benefits. We also have designated areas around our site, which don’t get cut in order to allow for natural habitats to thrive!
The Little Things
As a team we work hard to make little changes each and everyday that can add up to make a big difference, such as employing the reduce, reuse, recycle mindset wherever possible. This also includes sensible printing habits, keeping lights and heaters off in unused rooms, shutting external doors, car sharing to events/ site-visits. We also have electric vehicle charging points at our main office, allowing for our Director, other members of staff and visitors to park and charge whilst they are at Event House.
How can we help make your event more sustainable?
Sustainability is an important practice for everyone, people and businesses alike – with the events industry being no different. We are seeing an increasing number of our clients wishing to make their events more sustainable and making decisions that help to minimise the environmental impact of their event. Incorporating sustainability into the event planning process is one of our highest priorities, we want to create events that leave a lasting impression on your guests, not on the planet.
Determining Sustainability Goals
Before we get swept up in the exciting whirlwind of planning your event and diving into the logistics, we are happy to take some time with you to understand how you want your event to be sustainable. Whether your goal is to reduce waste, conserve energy, support local vendors or just wanting to make more responsible and environmentally considered choices – deciding this gives your event focus so that all decisions made regarding your event will be in service of this purpose.
Venue Choice
Here at Alastair Currie Events, we are proud to be the preferred event management team for a wide variety of venues across Bristol and the Southwest. One way we can help to make your event more sustainable is by choosing a suitable venue in close proximity to your guest list, in order to reduce the impact of transport. Alternatively, if your guests must travel, encouraging them to use public transport or even arranging a group transport option is a great way to reduce fuel consumption, coaches are particularly effective for corporate groups.
We also work with a range of sustainable venues and venues that are making efforts to be more environmentally conscious, such as through using renewable energy resources or having robust waste management schemes in place, for example.
Supplier Choices
We have accumulated a collection of fantastic local, trusted suppliers for any and all aspects of your event! We try to make conscious and environmentally responsible choices when choosing suppliers for our events. We always aim to choose suppliers that are local to the location of the event, to reduce milage and transport impact – whilst also taking the environmental credentials of our suppliers into heavy consideration when planning your event.
We are proud to work with a B Corp technical product partner that provides us with the most sustainable options for all our technical requirements, including power and lighting.
Food waste in landfills is responsible for roughly 8% of global emissions. Therefore, working with caterers who prioritise sustainability is a big step in the right direction towards a more sustainable event. Prioritising caterers who source locally, work to minimise food waste through careful planning and don’t use disposable products is a great way to boost the overall sustainability of your event.
Sustainable Event Materials
At Event House, we have a storeroom full of materials we sourced for previous events which we believe have the capacity to be reused in our future events. When planning new events, we always consider re-using materials in our stockroom before buying anything new. Alternatively, we consider buying materials second-hand where possible.
However, when a client has a specific vision for their event and we do need to bring materials in for them, we always prioritise hiring these items over buying, to reduce single-use purchases. Following the events, if we have any unrequired items or materials, we always try to donate these to local charities.
We make every attempt to ensure our equipment can be reused. Where things cannot be reused, we ensure they are recycled or disposed of correctly for the least possible environmental impact.
Leave no Trace Mentality
Whenever we organise an outdoor event, we employ a ‘leave no trace’ mentality. This means we focus on making sure that the environment of the event site is not negatively altered by the event. During set-up, we make sure that anything done to the land will not have any lasting damage. Post-event we work hard to ensure the site is returned to as close to its original state as possible. We do this by making sure all equipment is collected for re-use, recycling or correct disposal and the last thing we do before leaving any site is to litter pick. We ensure we survey the area pre and post event to compare these and ensure the site is returned to its original state.
