It made headlines for including science in its curriculum and welcoming Jewish boarders, known as Polacks. During World War II, it served as the US Army headquarters. The college has been home to notable alumni, including Trevor Howard, John Cleese, and John Inverdale. Its grounds hold historic significance, such as hosting the second-highest cricket score in a single match in 1899.
