Founded in 1849 following a donation from portrait artist Ellen Sharples, the RWA has played a significant role in the Bristol art scene. Originally serving as a base for the US Army during World War II, the building was reopened as an art gallery in 1950 after major restoration. In 1998, the RWA launched the Millennium Appeal, which funded crucial repairs and rejuvenated the building, ensuring it remains a vital cultural space in Bristol today.
